I went for my birthday on December 6th of last year to get a typical blowout with a deep conditioner. Throughout the process, I was indifferent to the heat styling and conditioning, especially since my hair came out fine and looked decent. However, I noticed a shift in my hair. It stayed completely straight for almost three weeks with no reversion to Georgia humidity, water or sweat. So when I washed my hair on the 22nd of December, it took 16 minutes for my hair to react even slightly to the water and shampoo. The bathroom also smelled a relaxer I used to use before I went natural. That's when I knew I was experiencing severe chemical and heat damage. I lost a substantial amount of hair and knew I needed to confront the issue head-on. So, I went to the salon and asked to discuss the issue outside. The mother-daughter duo did not want to talk outside, so I talked to the daughter about my hair and asked if she put a chemical relaxer in my hair. As expected, she said no and showed me the conditioner she used in my hair. There were clumps of powder poorly mixed into the conditioner. Was it relaxer? Who knows, but my hair's integrity was severely damaged and to date, I am still trying to revitalize my hair's strength, proteins, elasticity and porosity. I am extremely disappointed with my service there and will not be going back. I know plenty of people have very similar experiences when going to Dominican salons, so it is extremely unfortunate that there are little to no ethical protocols in place and that both hair and the customer can be treated so poorly.
